Biography

Dr. Adelaida Elisamehe Mghase is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, currently practicing at Muhimbili National Hospital. She is recognized as one of the first female plastic surgeons in Tanzania, reflecting her pioneering role in advancing surgical care and inspiring women in a traditionally male-dominated field.

She completed her Master???s degree in General Surgery at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and later specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery under the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), graduating in 2021. Her strong background in general surgery laid the foundation for her expertise in managing complex surgical conditions with precision and confidence.

Dr. Mghase???s practice encompasses both reconstructive and aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery, with a refined focus on delivering natural, balanced, and patient-centered outcomes. She has a growing reputation in aesthetic surgery, particularly in procedures involving the breast, body contouring, and soft tissue refinement.

Her work in breast surgery includes breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy (breast lift), and reconstruction following mastectomy. She is highly skilled in achieving symmetry and proportion, tailoring each procedure to the patient???s anatomy and desired outcome while maintaining a natural appearance.

In body contouring, Dr. Mghase performs procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and liposuction, helping patients restore body shape after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. Her approach emphasizes contour harmony, minimal scarring, and long-lasting results.

A key area of her expertise is scar management and optimization, where she applies both surgical and non-surgical techniques to improve the appearance and function of scars resulting from burns, trauma, or previous surgeries. Her background in reconstructive surgery gives her a unique advantage in managing even the most challenging scar conditions.

Dr. Mghase also has a strong interest in fat grafting (lipofilling), an advanced technique used to restore volume and improve contour in areas such as the breast, face, and post-traumatic defects. This technique allows for natural enhancement using the patient???s own tissue, aligning with her philosophy of achieving subtle and harmonious results.

In reconstructive surgery, her interests include hand surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, and complex wound management, where she continues to improve functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients with congenital anomalies, trauma, and post-burn deformities.

She has participated in prestigious international training programs, including the SHARE Global Plastic Surgery Fellowship and the Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery (PWRS) program under ReSurge International. These experiences have strengthened her expertise in advanced reconstructive techniques and modern aesthetic practices.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Mghase is actively involved in teaching and mentorship, contributing to the training of surgical residents, COSECSA fellows, and medical students at Muhimbili National Hospital. She has also participated in multiple outreach programs across Tanzania and the region, providing reconstructive surgical care to underserved communities.

Her academic contributions include peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international conferences, particularly in global surgery and craniofacial anomalies. As a leader and role model, she remains committed to advancing plastic surgery, promoting women in surgery, and expanding access to both reconstructive and aesthetic services in Tanzania and beyond
